Fitness starts with intention
Even though we're amid the holidays, my mind has already begun to think about making 2022 great! It's time for Rachael Recommends, December 2021 edition!
As I contemplated my current "favorites," I found myself full of ideas surrounding the question - What would make 2022 a good year? Or, put another way, at the end of 2022, how do I want to feel looking back on the year past?
I believe it starts in large part with intentionality: Pondering certain things like:
- what do I want to accomplish in 2022?
- what are my top priorities for next year?
- what are my greatest values?
- how do I want to spend my time in the upcoming year?
Pondering is not enough, though. We must apply certain behaviors to make sure our plans come to fruition. (So we can look back at the end of the year with satisfaction).
It's with this idea that I've compiled a few recommendations that may help set us up for a more intentional, productive, and fulfilling year.
Daily journal. Daily journals are excellent tools to help set intentions for the day ahead, plan and prioritize what we want to get done, make the most of the time we have, and reflect on the day passed. There are many wonderful options available. Whichever you choose, make sure it's one you feel most likely to use consistently.
Best Self Journal (I have personally used this many times and love it).
Mantra bracelets. Has anyone ever asked what your "one word" for the year is? The idea here is to choose a word or phrase to claim as your focus or theme for the upcoming year. I've heard of people selecting things like "persistence," "be brave," "find the positives," and "be present." Of course, there's no end to what you could choose. I like the idea of focusing on an area of growth or on a particular theme to carry mentally.
The only issue is this: we are forgetful people. This is where a token of remembrance is helpful. These bracelets can serve as a tool to pull the mind back to our predetermined focus.
(I know this is likely more of a girl thing than a guy thing, but some of these brands make excellent styles for men too). Check them out:
Mantra Band. Beautiful as well as inspiring!
Mantra Bracelets on Etsy. You can order your own custom bands for men or women (or kids).
Message Bracelets on Amazon. You can also find lots of options here.
Cosmic Kids Yoga Youtube channel. This "favorite" of mine has nothing to do with being intentional about 2022. If you have children on Christmas break, though, listen up!
My son began doing Cosmic Kids during the pandemic last year, and it was a lifesaver when we couldn't go outside. If you have kids, give it a try to bust the boredom of Christmas break (and maybe they'll even get along for a few minutes. One can hope)! Trust me; this is a fun and active activity worth the try.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
