Rachael Recommends || July 2024

Is there anyone anywhere whose favorite month is July? Show me a sane person who actually likes all this heat. I mean, July is HOT. If you're like me, you may feel like you're in the "dog days of summer." (The Dog Days of Summer is a real thing, by the way. Click here to learn more).

Scientists have found that the excess heat during this time can release stress hormones that negatively affect our bodies. We experience this in symptoms such as lack of motivation, anxiety and even depression. Luckily, there are things we can control to help mitigate these symptoms and get through this season.

This month's edition is all about motivating you to rise above the dog days of summer by taking control of what you can. I'll offer some ideas to stay motivated in my "how to" guide below.

How to: Survive the “Dog Days” of Summer

1) Continue To Be Active

When it’s really hot during the summer, it can be difficult to stay motivated to exercise. It doesn’t sound fun to sweat more. But exercise will release hormones that can help you feel happier and more motivated. Basically exercise begets exercise.

2) Stay Hydrated

We all know this is important, but do we actually act on this knowledge? At minimum, drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of fresh water daily. Add electrolytes for extra credit!

3) Fuel Your Body Well

Have you noticed this vicious cycle? - You are hot and unmotivated, so you choose to eat poorly. Then you feel even more unmotivated. So, you choose to eat poorly again. Instead of riding this cruel coaster, choose to fuel your body well and ride the waves of feeling awesome!

4) Mentally Prep Before A Workout

To experience even better feelings of accomplishment and joy, work hard when you come to workout. To get more out of your workouts, mentally prepare. While you drive to the gym, or warm up, think about what you want to get out of the workout, and how you want to perform.

5) Try Cold Thermogenesis

Not only will doing a cold plunge or taking an ice cold shower help you feel cooler and more invigorated, it can also help you burn fat! Look up cold thermogenesis on Youtube for the “how to.”

I hope you now feel motivated to push through! After all, this really is just a short season, and cool weather (and more natural motivation) will find us again. As always, I appreciate you reading my thoughts. Check out this article for additional ideas, and to learn the seriousness of the "dog days" of summer."
